VICTORIA, Seychelles – Opposition leader Patrick Herminie has won the presidential election in Seychelles, defeating incumbent Wavel Ramkalawan in a tightly contested runoff, according to official results released early Sunday.
Herminie secured 52.7% of the vote, while Ramkalawan garnered 47.3%, marking a significant political shift in the island nation.
Representing the United Seychelles party, Herminie leads a party that previously governed Seychelles for over four decades, from 1977 until its defeat in 2020. His victory marks a dramatic return to power for the former ruling party.
Ramkalawan, who was seeking a second term under the Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS) party, was unable to maintain the momentum that brought him to power five years ago.
This election marks a notable political comeback for United Seychelles and reflects changing sentiments among voters in the archipelago nation.
